AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

Tyler Perry’s accuser sent messages of thanks and friendship years after alleged assault

Text messages reveal that Tyler Perry and actor Mario Rodriguez, who recently accused the filmmaker of sexual assault, stayed in touch years after Rodriguez claims their interactions ended.

Rodriguez’s lawsuit, filed last week in California, alleges that Perry assaulted him during encounters from 2014 to 2019. The suit states Rodriguez ended contact in 2019, though Perry continued reaching out sporadically. Screenshots of messages obtained by news outlets show Rodriguez initiating contact with Perry as recently as Thanksgiving 2024 and again on August 31, 2025, expressing gratitude, friendship, and financial struggles.

In one Thanksgiving message, Rodriguez thanked Perry for his support during difficult times and said he appreciated him “to the moon.” In messages from August 31, Rodriguez described ongoing health issues, lack of insurance, and fear over financial hardships. The messages were provided by a source close to the situation who spoke anonymously.

Perry’s attorney, Alex Spiro, disputed the claims. “I said it before, and I will say it again. This is nothing but a $77 million money grab scam,” he said.

Rodriguez’s lawsuit seeks at least $77 million in damages and accuses Perry of sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Perry has denied the allegations.

This suit comes after a separate June case by actor Derek Dixon, who alleged Perry groped him while working on Perry’s television shows. That case was originally filed in California and later moved to federal court in Georgia. Perry has denied Dixon’s allegations as well.

Rodriguez’s attorney did not comment on the text messages when contacted.
