AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. He urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and comply fully with the permanent ceasefire and power-sharing arrangements under the agreement, T...

Abuja Federal High Court Pauses PDP Factional Leadership Suit Pending Appeal Court Ruling

The Federal High Court in Abuja has temporarily suspended proceedings in a high-stakes suit filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against the rival camp led by Tanimu Kabiru Turaki.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik delivered the ruling on Friday during the resumed hearing of the case, which seeks to restrain the Turaki-led leadership—from the 5th to 25th defendants—from parading themselves as representatives of the PDP in any capacity.

The suit was instituted by the Wike-aligned faction, including acting National Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman and factional National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

At the session, defence counsel Chris Uche, SAN, representing the Turaki camp, first withdrew an earlier application for a stay of proceedings. Plaintiffs' counsel Onyeachi Ikpeazu, SAN, raised no objection, and the judge struck out the application accordingly.

Uche then informed the court that the record of appeal on an aspect of the matter had been entered at the Court of Appeal. He urged Justice Abdulmalik to adjourn the substantive suit indefinitely, arguing that the entry of the appeal divested the High Court of jurisdiction to proceed.

Ikpeazu opposed the indefinite adjournment request, contending that the defence application lacked supporting affidavit evidence.

Citing legal authorities, Uche maintained that once an appeal is entered, jurisdiction automatically shifts to the appellate court.

In her ruling, Justice Abdulmalik partly upheld the defence submission. She adjourned the matter to **February 20, 2026**, for mention, pending the determination of the appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The development underscores the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP, with both factions locked in multiple legal battles over control of the party structure following disputed conventions and leadership claims. The suit (marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2501/2025 in related reports) also challenges aspects of the PDP's National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, in November 2025.
