 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  North Carolina woman charged with poisoning her daughter

A North Carolina woman has been charged with murder for allegedly poisoning her daughter last year and is now also connected to a cold case from 2007.

Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel, 52, of Hendersonville, faces two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and three counts related to distributing prohibited food or beverage, according to an arrest warrant. Authorities said she is linked to the 2025 death of her daughter, Leela Livis, and the attempted murders of Richard Pegg and Mia Lacey.

Investigators said the poisoning occurred in November 2025, shortly before her daughter’s death. Hendersonville, a town of just under 16,000 residents in western North Carolina, is south of Asheville. Officials have not disclosed how Casper-Leinenkugel is connected to the 2007 death of Michael Schmidt, who died in a fire in the same town.

Casper-Leinenkugel was being held at Henderson County Jail on Wednesday, and it was unclear if she had legal representation.

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity.
