Trump to meet Colombian president following public exchange of threats

President Trump spoke on Wednesday with Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and both leaders agreed to meet soon at the White House, marking their first direct conversation. The call aimed to ease tensions after a public exchange of threats that had raised concerns about U.S.-Colombia relations.

Earlier this week, Trump made remarks suggesting he supported an operation to remove Petro, whom he accused of ties to cocaine trafficking. Trump also warned the Colombian leader to “watch his ass.” Petro strongly denied the allegations, warning that any attempt to arrest him would “unleash the people’s jaguar” and stating he was ready to defend himself. During Wednesday’s hour-long call, Petro said he explained Colombia’s efforts against drug trafficking, shared related data, and discussed the situation in Venezuela. Both leaders emphasized restoring dialogue, with Trump noting he appreciated Petro’s call and tone, and Petro calling the conversation respectful and a step toward reducing the risk of conflict.
