The people of Umueri Village, Ogbunike, in Oyi Local Government Area, have staged a peaceful protest, calling on the Anambra State Government to intervene in the recent crisis allegedly caused by the sale of their communal land and the brutalisation of villagers by a former chairman, Mr. Levi Elobisi, his supporters, and the village security.

Speaking to ABS during the protest, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Umueri Village Welfare Association, Mr. Ikenna Onyekwuluje, while explaining that Mr. Elobisi served as Umueri village chairman until December 30, 2025, when the community passed a vote of no confidence on him and removed him from office, said the former chairman allegedly turned his office into an avenue for intimidation and illegal sale of communal lands, including the recent alleged sale of over two hundred plots, insisting that Umueri land is not for sale.

Some elders of the village, including Oba Eche Ezennia and Mr. Ebodinma Okaide, said such an incident is unusual in the history of the village and appealed to the state government to intervene urgently to prevent breakdown of law and order.

some alleged victims of the crisis, including a widow, Mrs. Justina Chidebelu, who claimed that her late husband’s land was sold and she was beaten, and an elderly woman, Mrs. Virginia Elobisi, whose children were arrested yesterday, appealed to government and well-meaning Nigerians to help them recover their land and secure the release of their children.
