Vice Chancellor Prof. Omenugha Officially Reopens UniOjukwu 106.1FM, Restores COOU’s Broadcast Voice

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) on Friday, 30th January 2026, witnessed a historic moment as the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, officially reopened the university’s campus radio station, UniOjukwu 106.1FM, at the Department of Mass Communication, Igbariam Campus. The reopening marks the return of the university’s broadcast voice, offering a platform for students, staff, and the surrounding community to engage, learn, and share information.

The revitalization of UniOjukwu 106.1FM stood as a cornerstone of Prof. Omenugha’s visionary leadership from the outset. Drawing on her deep-rooted passion for media education and her pioneering legacy including her foundational role in establishing UNIZIK 94.1FM as one of Nigeria’s earliest campus radio initiatives. Prof. Omenugha championed the project’s revival with firm personal dedication.

As a distinguished Professor of Mass Communication and a trailblazer in the field, she infused the effort with her longstanding conviction that practical broadcasting platforms are essential for nurturing ethical, innovative, and community-oriented communicators, propelling the station’s rebirth through her strategic advocacy and inspirational guidance.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Omenugha emphasized that the station is not only for the university community but also for the surrounding populace. “This station is here to serve not just us, but all the people around us,” she affirmed. She cited examples such as cultural announcements like iri ji festivities, which local residents can broadcast, thereby enhancing the university’s visibility and strengthening its bond with the community.

The Vice-Chancellor also encouraged students to leverage the station to develop their skills, stating, “Wherever you find talent, nurture it. Keep the station in great use, and handle the equipment with care. This platform is an opportunity to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully.” She further emphasized the importance of awareness campaigns, including road walks, to ensure that the community knows about the station and its services.

The reopening of UniOjukwu 106.1FM represents more than just a technical restoration; it is a strategic step in advancing the university’s 3Vs trajectory—Values, Viability, and Visibility. As a values-driven institution, the station promotes ethical communication and intellectual discourse. It serves as a practical training ground for students, enhancing their viability in the media industry, while increasing the university’s visibility across the region.
