El-Rufai Reportedly Suffers Nosebleed In Detention, Wife Barred From Delivering Meal – Aide

Nasir El-Rufai’s media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, has expressed concern over the former governor’s condition while in custody, alleging that he experienced a nosebleed and that his wife was prevented from handing his meal to him directly.

In a statement released on Monday, Adekeye said El-Rufai has been detained for eight days after voluntarily honoring an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on February 16, 2026.

According to him, although El-Rufai was questioned and granted administrative bail, he has remained in custody as his legal team seeks a review of the bail terms.

Adekeye described the continued detention as unwarranted.

He further claimed that on February 17, one of El-Rufai’s wives was asked to hand over his meal to an EFCC official instead of delivering it to him personally.

Adekeye also disclosed that El-Rufai suffered a nosebleed overnight while in detention, a development his lawyers reportedly cited in raising concerns about his health and access to family members and counsel.

The statement added that on February 18, El-Rufai was transferred from EFCC custody to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) without prior notice to him or his lawyers.

Since the transfer, his legal team has reportedly applied for bail from the ICPC but has not received a response. Adekeye maintained that no remand order has been presented to justify holding him beyond the constitutionally allowed period.

El-Rufai is expected to appear in court on February 25 in a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Federal Government, the ICPC, the EFCC, and the Department of State Services, seeking an order granting him bail.

Adekeye said the circumstances surrounding the former governor’s detention raise concerns about his welfare and adherence to due process as the legal proceedings move forward.
