In Loving Memory of Eric Dane - Grey’s Anatomy Closes Episode With Tribute to Eric Dane

As the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy came to a close on February 26, the usual credits gave way to something quieter, a tribute to Eric Dane.

The ABC medical drama ended the night with a 60 second montage celebrating Dane’s character, Dr. Mark Sloan, known to fans as McSteamy.

The clip revisited some of his most memorable scenes, from his confident arrival at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to lines that helped define the character over seven seasons.

The montage was set to Tommee Profitt and Fleurie’s cover of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars,” a song deeply woven into the show’s history. It first appeared during the season 2 finale in 2006 and was later used again during the series’ 400th episode celebration in 2022.

On social media, the show’s official Instagram account shared the tribute with a simple caption, “In loving memory of Eric Dane. ❤️”

The video ended with a black and white portrait of the actor. His passing came on the twentieth anniversary of his first appearance on the series.

Dane portrayed Mark Sloan for seven seasons, turning the charming plastic surgeon into one of the show’s most recognizable figures.

His character navigated complicated relationships and professional challenges before his storyline concluded in season 9 after a plane crash.

Eric Dane passed away at 53 on February 19, ten months after publicly sharing his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE, his family said, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

They added, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.

Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time.”
