Kaduna Monarch Seeks First Class Status For Koro Chiefdom
The Koro Chiefdom in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State has marked 25 years of traditional leadership with a colourful Silver Jubilee celebration and Koro Day 2026 held in Kubacha, the chiefdom’s headquarters.
The event, themed “Koro Tradition, Culture and Progress: 25 Years of Koro Chiefdom’s Journey So Far,” drew government officials, traditional rulers, security agencies, community leaders and cultural performers from across the state.
The celebration featured vibrant cultural displays, including traditional dances, masquerades and attire that reflected the history and identity of the Koro people.
Representing Governor Uba Sani, the Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, commended the state government’s commitment to peace, inclusiveness and equitable development. She noted that people-focused policies had created an enabling environment for communities to preserve their culture and use it as a driver of social and economic growth.
According to her, cultural festivals such as Koro Day promote unity, pride and active community participation, while linking heritage with future aspirations.
The traditional ruler of the chiefdom, the Ere Koro I, His Highness Dr Yohanna Akaito, described his 25-year reign since the creation of the chiefdom in 2001 as both challenging and fulfilling. He urged residents to continue supporting government initiatives aimed at sustaining peace, stability and development.
Dr Akaito also appealed to the Kaduna State Government to elevate the Koro Chiefdom to First Class status, restore its original name, create additional districts and construct a befitting palace.
He said reinstating district heads removed under previous administrations would strengthen grassroots governance and improve security.
Similarly, the National President of the Koro Community Development Association, Prof Magaji Kutaho, called for enhanced security in Kagarko Local Government Area and renewed demands for the chiefdom’s elevation, citing its population, cultural heritage and historical importance.
In a goodwill message, the Minister of Defence, Gen Christopher Musa (retd.), represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Security, Musa Likita, congratulated the chief and people of Koro on the successful celebration and reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling insecurity nationwide.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to prominent Nigerians, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Abbas Tajudeen, and Gen Musa, in recognition of their contributions to national development and security.
