White House hails approval to rename Palm Beach airport for Trump

The White House on Friday celebrated Florida lawmakers’ approval of a bill to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Trump. The legislation now moves to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s desk for final signature.

White House communications director Steven Cheung praised the move on X, writing, “Has a GREAT ring to it… President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” alongside a screenshot of news coverage. The bill passed the state House 81-30 on Tuesday and the state Senate 25-11 on Thursday. If DeSantis signs it, the Federal Aviation Administration would also need to approve the name change, which could take effect July 1. Lawmakers plan to determine the cost of rebranding, including a potential rights agreement for promotional use of the new name.

Democrats criticized the legislation, saying the process ignored local input and pushed to wait until after Trump leaves office. Rep. Lois Frankel said decisions on naming major infrastructure should include the community most affected. State Sen. LaVon Bracy Davis called Trump “one of the most polarizing figures in modern history” and said renaming the airport endorses a controversial legacy. Some Democratic legislators also suggested delaying any change to account for potential new revelations related to Trump and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Supporters, including Republicans, emphasized Trump’s connection to Florida, noting he is the first Florida resident to serve as president and lives near the airport. Rep. Meg Weinberger said, “This is the President’s hometown; he lives five miles away from the airport.” State senators have recommended $2.75 million for rebranding, down from a previous $5.5 million estimate, with further budget negotiations expected. The move comes after the Trump Organization filed to trademark the president’s name for use at airports.
