FED. MINISTRY OF EDUCATION MANDATES ALL TEACHERS TO BE FULLY CERTIFIED/LICENSED  BY 2026/2027 ACADEMIC SESSION

Concerns over unqualified individuals in classrooms and the need to strengthen professionalism in the teaching sector have prompted a renewed regulatory push in Nigeria’s education system.

All teachers across the country are now required to be fully certified and licensed before the end of the 2026/2027 academic session.

This directive issued by the Federal Ministry of Education and to be enforced by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), ensuring that only professionally qualified educators are allowed to teach in Nigerian schools.

Teachers are expected to access the Council’s official portal to obtain or renew their licences, which will remain valid for three years. In addition, certified teachers seeking employment opportunities outside Nigeria will be issued Letters of Professional Standing, this move is designed to enhance global mobility and competitiveness of Nigerian educators.

As part of the strengthened regulatory framework, a mandatory induction programme will now precede full registration. The Council also made it clear that individuals with criminal records will be disqualified from registration, reinforcing efforts to safeguard standards and integrity within the profession.
