Manhattan man charged with murder after allegedly pushing 83-year-old onto subway tracks, killing him

Bairon Hernandez has been charged with murder after allegedly pushing an 83-year-old man onto subway tracks in Manhattan, an attack that led to the elderly man’s death a week later. Hernandez is also accused of shoving another person onto the tracks the same day, March 8, at the Lexington Avenue-63rd Street station.

Authorities say the assault was random and unprovoked. Investigators reported that Hernandez first pushed a 30-year-old man onto the tracks before approaching Richard Williams, who was walking with a cane, and shoving him as well. Williams fell, hitting his head and suffering a brain bleed, and died nine days later from his injuries. The younger victim sustained less severe injuries, and both were rescued by Good Samaritans before any trains arrived. Hernandez, 34, was arrested two days after the attack and faces charges including second-degree murder and attempted assault. Family members described Williams as an active, independent man who loved life on Roosevelt Island, calling the attack “abhorrent” and “unthinkable.”
