Meta begins testing Instagram Plus, a paid subscription with exclusive Story features in select countries

Meta has started testing a new premium subscription for Instagram called Instagram Plus in select countries, giving users access to a range of exclusive features. The move comes two months after the company announced plans to experiment with paid subscriptions across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.

Instagram Plus allows subscribers to view Stories without notifying the poster, track how many people have rewatched their Stories, and create unlimited audience lists beyond the standard Close Friends option. Users can also extend a Story by 24 hours, spotlight one Story per week to boost visibility, give animated “Superlikes” on others’ Stories, and search their viewer list to quickly find a specific person. Reports indicate the trial is currently running in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines, with prices ranging from roughly $1 to $2.20 per month depending on the country.

The subscription is separate from Meta Verified, which is aimed at content creators and businesses, and is intended for everyday users. While Meta aims to generate additional revenue through Instagram Plus, some users have expressed concerns over subscription fatigue. Competitors like Snapchat and X have shown there is demand for social media subscriptions, with Snapchat+ surpassing 25 million subscribers. Meta plans to continue testing Instagram Plus before expanding it further.
