"RELEASE OUR MONEY"—JOSTUM STUDENTS PROTEST PARTIAL NELFUND DISBURSEMENT

Students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, on Monday staged a protest over alleged partial disbursement of their NELFUND student loans, demanding full payment and transparency from the institution’s management.

The protest follows growing concerns among beneficiaries of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), a federal initiative designed to ease financial pressure on students by covering tuition and related fees.

According to accounts from students, only part of the approved loan funds was reportedly released, while the balance remains unaccounted for.

The development comes amid reports that the university received over ₦58 million for the 2025/2026 academic session to support hundreds of students.

Protesters described the situation as financially distressing, noting that the scheme was introduced to reduce the burden of school fees.

Students are demanding full disclosure of disbursement records, immediate payment of outstanding balances, and clearer communication from university authorities.

“We rely on this loan to stay in school. Any deduction defeats the purpose,” a protesting student said.

Another added, “We just want transparency and fairness in how the funds are handled.”

As of press time, the university management and the Vice-Chancellor had yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
