Keith Urban Finds a New Groove With Surprise ‘Flow State’ Project

Keith Urban is opening up about a new creative chapter that began as a simple studio experiment and gradually turned into a full album project.

Speaking ahead of his induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, the 56-year-old musician shared that his upcoming work, Flow State, was never originally planned as a formal release.

He explained that it started casually after he bought a new studio space and simply wanted to test it out with a few recordings.

What followed, he said, was an unplanned dive into a sound that felt familiar and refreshing. The project leaned heavily into yacht rock influences, a style he revisited with a sense of nostalgia and enjoyment rather than commercial intent.

Urban described how early studio sessions quickly expanded. What began as a couple of tracks gradually grew over months into a full collection, eventually forming a complete album without any structured plan behind it.

The record features a mix of covers alongside one original song, and includes collaborations with artists such as Michael McDonald, Little Big Town, and John Mayer. Production was handled by Urban in collaboration with producer Dann Huff.

Two songs from the project were recently released, including his collaboration with McDonald and a solo reinterpretation of a classic yacht rock track. Both highlight his signature guitar style and a relaxed, melodic approach that reflects the tone of the entire project.

Urban said the experience in the studio felt natural and unforced, with one session leading to another as the music continued to evolve on its own. There was no strict roadmap, just a growing collection of songs that eventually became something larger.

Looking back on his career, he reflected on how his approach to music has changed over time.

Experience, he said, has shaped both his sound and his outlook, making him more intentional about simplicity and emotional clarity in his work.

He also hinted at the project earlier this year during a music industry event in Nashville, where he described it as a themed collection rooted in yacht rock, adding that it was very real and very intentional in its sound direction, even if it began casually.
