 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.  LAGOS DEEPENS TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE ON DIGITAL PEDAGOGY, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE


As part of efforts to boost teaching and learning outcomes, the Lagos State Government, through the State Teaching Service Commission, flagged off a 3-day training program on digital pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for secondary schools’ teachers selected across the six education districts and LASTVEB.


Declaring the workshop open at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Hall, the Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Ali-Balogun disclosed that the digital training on artificial intelligence is long overdue as the country is at a critical time when education is rapidly evolving in response to technological advancement.


Alli-Balogun charged participants to infuse digital pedagogy, artificial intelligence and problem-solving skills in their teaching methodology and be abreast with new teaching techniques as they evolve if they must succeed in their chosen profession. 


He observed that the education landscape is constantly evolving, and it is essential to stay updated on the latest strategies and best practices by creating a learning environment that promotes creativity, productivity, and respect which aligns with Mr. Governor’s T-H-E-M-E-S Plus Agenda where the 3rd pillar is strictly for Education and Technology.


While appreciating the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola-Sanwo-Olu, for his strong commitment to transforming education in Lagos State by empowering teachers through various capacity development programs, Alli-Balogun noted that such capacity building workshops are expected to upscale and enhance proper integration of teachers at all levels.


Welcoming participants to the workshop, the Chairman of the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, noted that the workshop which centered on digital pedagogy and artificial intelligence is more than the use of digital devices or online tools but a shift in teachers’ mindset which challenges them to move from teacher-centered instruction to learner-centered engagement, where students are active participants in their own learning journey. 


Mrs. Peregrino noted that the training on Artificial Intelligence and digital pedagogy is designed to deepen the creative thinking of teachers as well as challenge them to consider new ways of teaching using innovative ideas and solutions that will drive the attainment of the objectives of the Education and Technology pillar of the THEMES Plus Agenda of the State Government.


While encouraging the participants to make the most of the training opportunity and maximise the opportunity to improve themselves as well as students’ performances, Mrs. Peregrino charged them to embrace, learn and adapt new strategies that will improve teaching and learning outcomes and at the same time, remain mindful of ethical considerations, including responsible use of technology and data privacy.


She said “To all the participants here today, remember that you are agents of change. I challenge you therefore not to allow the knowledge and skills you will acquire here to end in this room, cascade it to your colleagues and downlines. Let it have a ripple effect through your classrooms, your schools and your communities. You have the power to shape a generation that is not only digitally literate but also adaptable, ethical, and forward-thinking”.


“With this training, you will have the opportunity to critically examine and explore different types of digital pedagogy and Artificial Intelligence that can be used in the classroom and address practical concerns about its usage. But let me emphasise that AI is not a replacement for teachers, but a support system to strengthen your effectiveness in the classroom. Your role as educators remains central and irreplaceable” Mrs. Peregrino concluded.


The 3-Day workshop with the theme “DIGITAL PEDAGOGY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) FOR TEACHERS on GLs 15-17“which commenced on Wednesday April 8th, 2026 is expected to draw to a close on Friday April 10th,  2026 with a communique.
