Dust storms, heavy rain, and lightning have killed at least 96 people across northern India, officials said Thursday, after severe weather swept through multiple districts in the country’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, late Wednesday.
More than 50 others were injured as the storms moved through the region, with officials saying many of the deaths were caused by falling trees, collapsing structures, and lightning strikes. Emergency crews and police used chainsaws and cranes to clear debris, including uprooted trees blocking roads and railway lines in several districts.
Authorities said widespread damage was reported to homes, crops, and power infrastructure, particularly in rural areas, as strong winds tore through communities. Emergency response teams were deployed across the affected districts as cleanup and rescue efforts continued.
Residents in Prayagraj district described sudden and intense conditions, with powerful winds turning skies dark and sending debris flying through neighborhoods. Some said tin roofs were torn away and trees fell throughout the area as people rushed indoors for safety.
In nearby Bhadohi district, residents said homes were severely damaged within minutes as the storm intensified. Some families fled collapsing structures and sought shelter with relatives after their houses were destroyed.
Storms of this type are relatively common in northern India during the hot pre-monsoon season from March to June, before the annual monsoon arrives. Officials said relief operations are underway, and Uttar Pradesh authorities have ordered emergency services to complete response efforts quickly and provide compensation and aid to affected families.
