Gunmen kill at least 16, including six police officers, in two separate attacks on Honduras coast

At least 16 people, including six police officers, were killed in two separate armed attacks Thursday along the Honduran coast, authorities said.

The first attack occurred at a plantation in the northern municipality of Trujillo, where gunmen opened fire on workers, killing at least 10 people, according to police. Officials said the area is part of a resource-rich region that has long been affected by ongoing agrarian disputes spanning decades.

In a second incident, armed assailants ambushed police officers in the municipality of Omoa in the Cortés department near the Guatemalan border, killing six officers, including a senior-ranking official. Police said the officers were part of an anti-gang operation and were traveling from the capital, Tegucigalpa, when they were attacked.

Authorities said the death toll from the Trujillo shooting could still change, noting that the situation remains unclear because relatives of victims reportedly removed some bodies before investigators arrived. Forensic teams and prosecutors have since been deployed to the scene.

Honduran security forces, including police and the military, are preparing coordinated responses in both affected areas as investigations into the attacks continue.
