Meta is introducing a new “incognito” mode on WhatsApp that allows users to have private conversations with its AI chatbot, aiming to address concerns about how sensitive information is handled.
The feature enables temporary chats with Meta AI, the company’s built-in assistant, where messages are processed in a secure environment, are not saved by default, and disappear once the session ends. The company says that it cannot access the contents of these conversations.
The move comes as privacy concerns continue to surround generative AI systems, which are often trained on large amounts of data that can include user-provided information. Many users turn to chatbots for personal, financial, or health-related questions, increasing demand for stronger privacy protections.
Other AI platforms have introduced similar controls, allowing users to disable chat history or prevent their data from being used to train models. Meta says its incognito mode is designed to offer a comparable level of privacy within its messaging platform.
The feature also includes safeguards that limit responses to harmful or inappropriate topics. If users ask certain types of questions, the system may redirect them to safer information, refuse to პასუხ, or end the interaction entirely.
Incognito chats are limited to text-based interactions, meaning users cannot upload or generate images while using the feature. Users must also confirm their age before accessing the tool, as the platform restricts access for those under 13.
