Putin to meet Xi in Beijing for talks on strengthening Russia-China partnership

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing from May 19 to 20, according to statements from both governments, in a high-level visit expected to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and coordinating on global issues.

The meeting comes less than a week after Xi held talks in Beijing with U.S. President Donald Trump, marking the second time the leaders of the world’s two largest economies have met in under a year. Putin’s upcoming visit is being framed by Moscow as part of broader efforts to mark the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation, which underpins relations between Russia and China.

During the talks, both sides are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including economic cooperation, energy ties, and strategic coordination, as well as international and regional developments. Officials from Moscow said the agenda includes further expanding what they describe as a comprehensive partnership between the two countries.

Beijing confirmed the visit in a brief statement, signaling agreement on the planned meetings but offering few additional details.

Russia remains one of the world’s largest oil producers, while China is among its biggest energy customers, a trade relationship that has become an increasingly important pillar of their broader economic and diplomatic alignment in recent years.
