Legendary skater Marc Johnson has passed away at the age of 49.
News of Johnson’s passing was shared by close friend and fellow skateboarder Louie Barletta in a heartfelt statement published through Thrasher Magazine on Tuesday, May 26.
Barletta described Johnson as one of the most gifted and original figures skateboarding had ever seen.
“Marc Johnson passed away today,” he wrote. “He was one of the most talented and creative people to ever step on or off a skateboard.”
The loss appeared to come as a shock to those close to him. Barletta shared that he had recently spent time with Johnson in San Jose and said the skater seemed to be in a good place.
“He was sober, healthy, and full of life,” he recalled. “We spent time talking about old memories and he seemed excited for what was ahead.”
Johnson, who was named Skateboarder of the Year by Thrasher in 2007, built a reputation as one of the most influential names in modern skateboarding.
Known for his creativity, style, and technical skill, he inspired an entire generation of skaters through his video parts and projects.
Barletta reflected on first meeting Johnson as teenagers and watching his journey unfold over the years, from achieving major success in skateboarding to facing personal struggles later in life.
“He was a genius and also someone who carried a lot inside,” he said, adding that Johnson always wanted people to remember him for his skateboarding rather than his mistakes.
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Johnson reportedly grew up in humble surroundings before eventually making a name for himself around the world through skateboarding.
According to Barletta, Johnson’s impact stretched beyond tricks and competitions. He credited him with helping other skaters find opportunities and opening doors for people who may never have had a chance otherwise.
“Everything he touched felt like art,” Barletta said. “He always wanted to lift the people around him.”
No cause of d3ath has been publicly confirmed.
Over the years, Johnson had also spoken honestly about his struggles with alcohol addiction. In a 2013 interview with Jenkem Magazine, he described going through a difficult period with alcoholism before later embracing sobriety.
