At least 19 people were injured early Sunday after a stampede broke out in Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, during a crowded Memorial Day weekend gathering.

Emergency crews responded around 1:05 a.m. to a stage area near South Ocean Boulevard, where first responders, assisted by local law enforcement, found multiple injured individuals. Officials did not name the event, but the incident occurred as the Black Pearl Cultural Heritage and Bike Festival was taking place in the Atlantic Beach area near Myrtle Beach.

Three people were taken to a hospital for treatment, while others are believed to have sought medical care on their own. Authorities said all reported injuries were non-life-threatening.

The cause of the stampede has not yet been determined. The annual festival typically draws as many as 40,000 attendees to the area over the holiday weekend, according to town officials.
