 Trump says he is 'in no hurry' as US and Iran remain without deal to end fourth-month conflict

  

The United States and Iran have not yet reached an agreement to end the conflict, entering its fourth month, with President Donald Trump saying Saturday he is in “no hurry” to finalize a deal.

In an interview with Lara Trump on Fox News, the president said he is seeking an agreement that would prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. While he said he would prefer a quick resolution, he stressed that rushing the process would undermine the quality of any deal and warned that military action remains an option if talks fail.

“I’d like to say I’m in a hurry because gasoline prices are going to come tumbling down, but if you’re going to be in a hurry, you’re not going to make a good deal,” Trump said. “And slowly but surely we’re getting, I think, what we want, and if we don’t get what we want we’re going to end it a different way.”

“We’re going to make a great deal, [otherwise] we’ll just go back and finish it off militarily,” he added.

Negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials have been ongoing for weeks as a fragile ceasefire holds. The conflict has disrupted global energy markets and contributed to inflation reaching its highest level since May 2023 after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz at the outset of the war.

The Strait, which carries roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies, remains largely disrupted. U.S. gas prices averaged about $4.34 per gallon on Sunday, according to data cited by industry trackers.

Trump has insisted that any agreement must include guarantees that Iran will never develop a nuclear weapon and must reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He ended a White House meeting on Friday without a final decision on the proposal after previously signaling he would make a determination during the session.

Reports indicate he also requested revisions to provisions concerning Iran’s nuclear material and maritime access. In the interview, Trump said he also added language explicitly prohibiting Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon in addition to restrictions on development.
