 UBA Denies Viral Divorce Rumour Against Tony Elumelu, Arrests Three Over Defamatory Post

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has strongly refuted a viral social media claim alleging that its Group Chairman, Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, has divorced his wife, Mrs. Awele Elumelu, describing the report as false, fabricated and malicious.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the bank’s Group Head of Brand, Marketing and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, UBA said the publication was a deliberate and reckless attempt to damage the reputation of the bank and its chairman.

“The attention of UBA Group has been drawn to a false, defamatory, and malicious publication currently circulating on social media platforms, falsely alleging that the Group Chairman, Mr Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, has divorced his wife,” the statement read.

The bank emphasised that the claim has no factual basis and was designed to mislead the public. It described the content as “entirely fabricated, reckless, and without basis,” adding that it was a “deliberate falsehood” intended to cause reputational harm.

UBA disclosed that it has reported the matter to security agencies, confirming that three individuals linked to the creation and spread of the false information have already been arrested. 

The arrested persons are Kingsley Akunemeihe (known on social media as @Directorkem), Chigozie Ihebom, and John Nwanorue (known as @problemchimky).

The bank said investigations are ongoing and may result in further arrests and prosecutions.

“This serves as a formal notice to all individuals, platforms, and entities involved in the publication, reposting, or continued dissemination of this content to immediately cease and desist,” the statement warned.

UBA directed all those in possession of the defamatory materials to take them down and preserve them for possible legal proceedings. It cautioned that failure to comply would attract both civil and criminal actions.

The bank reiterated its commitment to protecting the reputation and privacy of its chairman and the institution, vowing to pursue all available legal remedies against those responsible.
