Anambra Assembly Seeks Security Identification Numbers for Okada, Keke, Shuttle Bus Operators

The Anambra State House of Assembly has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Commissioner for Transport to immediately establish a security identification numbering system for all commercial transport operators in the state, including okada riders, keke operators, shuttle bus operators and other commercial vehicle operators, as part of efforts to strengthen public safety and security.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Nnewi North Constituency, Hon. Augustine Ike, and co-sponsored by twenty two other lawmakers during plenary on June 25 in Awka.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Ike observed that the absence of a proper security identification system for commercial transport operators has made it difficult for security agencies and relevant government authorities to effectively identify, monitor and regulate their activities, particularly in cases involving robbery, kidnapping, theft and other criminal acts allegedly perpetrated by unregistered and unidentified operators.
He expressed confidence that creating an official database with security identification numbers would make it easier to trace operators and their locations whenever crimes occur, thereby enhancing public safety and security across the state.
Hon. Ike further noted that the lack of a reliable identification and tracking mechanism for commercial transport operators poses serious security challenges, as victims of crimes committed through such means often find it difficult to identify and trace the perpetrators.
Contributing to the debate, member representing Idemili North Constituency, Hon. Kingsley Udemezue; member representing Ihiala II Constituency, Hon. Golden Iloh; and member representing Onitsha North I Constituency, Hon. Mimi Azikiwe, described the motion as timely, noting that its implementation would promote safety, accountability and effective regulation of commercial transportation in the state.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, who presided over the plenary, said introducing security identification numbers for commercial transport operators would strengthen the efforts of security agencies in combating crime and make it easier to identify and apprehend offenders.
The House subsequently resolved to urge the Governor to direct the Commissioner for Transport to establish the security identification numbering system for all commercial transport operators in the state.
