Anambra Begins Reconstruction of Onitsha Main Market, Targets Completion Before 2026 Carnival

The Anambra State Government has commenced the reconstruction and modernization of the Onitsha Main Market as part of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo's vision to transform the facility into a world-class international commercial hub.
The project gained momentum on June 24 when the Commissioner for Housing, Arc. Henry Arize, formally handed over the project site to ten contractors selected to execute various components of the redevelopment.
Speaking during the ceremony at the Main Market Hall in Onitsha North Local Government Area, he urged contractors and market stakeholders to ensure the successful and timely delivery of the project.
Arc. Arize disclosed that the state government intends to substantially complete the project before the 2026 Onitsha Carnival scheduled for December. He assured the contractors of adequate security, electricity supply, and other logistical support to enable round-the-clock construction activities where necessary.
He explained that the project, expected to be completed within 16 weeks, will provide modern facilities including a medical centre, recreational spaces, a modern parking facility, water fountains, and improved open areas aimed at enhancing the experience of traders and visitors.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Nonso Ebonwu, appealed to traders to cooperate with the government and contractors throughout the reconstruction period, noting that the completed project would significantly improve the market's aesthetics and commercial value.
Represented by Engr. Obiora Okafor, the commissioner further charged the contractors to adhere strictly to project specifications and timelines, emphasizing Gov. Soludo's commitment to quality project delivery and accountability.
The Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Hon. Chijoke Okpalaugo, assured traders and contractors of adequate security during the construction period. He also outlined the scope of the project, which includes the construction of roads, parks, roofing and cladding works, structural steel installations, solar-powered street lighting, boreholes, and ceiling systems across various sections of the market.
Other components of the project include the construction of bus stop shelters, toilet facilities, clinics, ticketing booths, and other supporting infrastructure designed to improve the overall functionality and attractiveness of the market.
