 TEAM LAGOS EMERGES TOP AT 23RD NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL SOUTH WEST ELIMINATION Lagos State athletes proved their dominance in the South West by edging out regional competitors and emerging top in the five team events contested at the elimination series qualifier for the 23rd National Sports Festival later this year in Enugu. The elimination series featured team events in volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and cricket in male and female categories. While the team clinched only the female football ticket by topping their group, they showed dominance in three other sports by winning both the male and female tickets. Team Lagos took first position in the volleyball male and female categories. The male team defeated their counterparts from Ondo in the finals by 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20, while the female team defeated Team Oyo by 25-18, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25, and 15-8.  Canada’s first World Cup win marred by gruesome Ismaël Koné leg injury in 6-0 rout of Qatar 

 Canada's first World Cup victory was overshadowed by a horrific injury to midfielder Ismaël Koné during a dominant 6-0 win over Qatar.

The 24-year-old suffered a serious left-leg injury in the second half after Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo tackled him from behind. Koné immediately went down in pain as players from both teams rushed to his side and called for medical assistance.

Madibo was shown a red card for the challenge, while Koné's teammates formed a protective circle around him as he received treatment on the field. He was later stretchered off and transported to a local hospital, where he was preparing to undergo surgery while surrounded by family members.

Canada captain Stephen Eustáquio was among the first players to reach Koné and quickly realized the severity of the injury.

"I saw his leg. I saw that something wasn't right," Eustáquio said.

Head coach Jesse Marsch said the incident occurred directly in front of Canada's bench and that those nearby could hear the injury happen.

"Everybody was crushed when it happened, but we had to find a way to stay focused. We knew that Ismaël wanted us to finish the job," Marsch said. "There's a lot of thoughts that go through our heads right now. We're all thinking about him, but we're all very proud of what we are."

Marsch also said Madibo personally apologized to Koné following the tackle.

The red card left Qatar with nine players after Homam Ahmed had already been sent off earlier in the match.

Less than 10 minutes after replacing Koné, Nathan Saliba scored Canada's fourth goal and honored his teammate by holding up Koné's jersey during the celebration.

Jonathan David, who scored three goals in the victory, criticized the challenge that caused the injury.

"If there's a play where you cannot win the ball, there's no point," David said. "It's just to hurt people."

The full extent of Koné's injury has not been disclosed, although images from the match appeared to show a severe break in his lower left leg.

"We're going to miss him," Eustáquio said. "He has that X factor that our team really needs."
