A footballer in Venezuela has confirmed the death of his wife, Andrea Bello, following a pair of earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday, June 24.
Héctor Bello, who plays for Marítimo de La Guaira, shared the news in an Instagram post on Friday, June 26, saying Andrea died while protecting their 1-year-old daughter, Alana.
"You'll always be our favorite hero, Mommy," he wrote alongside a photo of his wife. "I'm going to make sure our baby remembers how wonderful you were, how much you loved her."
He added that he would tell their daughter how Andrea acted during the earthquake. "I'll tell her the story of how you saved her, how you gave your own life for our daughter, how you were a brave woman who, even with your last breaths, never abandoned her," he wrote.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Venezuela experienced a magnitude 7.2 earthquake followed shortly by a magnitude 7.5 tremor, described as a “severe seismic doublet sequence.” Reports indicate it is among the strongest earthquake events recorded in the country in over a century.
The Venezuelan football press and publicity organisation Cumaná de Campeones said in an Instagram statement that Andrea was found in the rubble of a collapsed residential building. The organisation also noted that the child survived the building collapse.
"[Their] daughter survived the collapse of the building where the entire family lived," the statement said, adding that the football community in Sucre had expressed support for the family.
In additional posts, Héctor Bello referred to his wife as a “hero” and addressed his daughter directly, writing that he is struggling with the situation but remains focused on her care.
“My daughter, I need you to be strong. Just wait a little longer,” he wrote. “I need you to be the one to heal my heart, which is in pieces.”
He added that the child is now his focus. “Now it's just you and me and your mommy watching over us from heaven,” he wrote.
