Jennifer Hudson brings tears to Michelle and Barack Obama's eyes at center opening ceremony

Jennifer Hudson moved Michelle and Barack Obama to tears with her powerful rendition of the National Anthem at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The June 18 event, held in John Lewis Plaza, featured a star-studded lineup including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Common, Christina Aguilera, Eddie Vedder, and U2’s Bono and The Edge.

Hudson, dressed in a flowing white suit, followed her anthem performance with Dream the Impossible Dream, captivating the Obamas, fellow former presidents, and thousands of attendees.

Fans watching online praised Hudson’s voice, calling her performance “outstanding” and “perfect for big moments.” Aguilera followed with a dramatic set, while Vedder joined local youth musicians to debut an original song.

The invite-only celebration drew 3,000 guests, including Oprah Winfrey, Billie Jean King, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Gabrielle Union, Quinta Brunson, and late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and David Letterman, who humorously referenced Obama’s infamous tan suit with their own attire.

The 19-acre Obama Presidential Center, built over five years, combines a museum, library branch, athletic facilities, playgrounds, and gardens, aiming to serve as a hub for the South Side community.

Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett emphasized that while the center bears the Obamas’ name, it belongs to the people, celebrating ordinary citizens who achieved extraordinary things.

She framed the center as both a tribute to the past and a challenge to future generations to continue shaping the nation’s story.
