More than 36 hours after a pair of catastrophic earthquakes devastated parts of Venezuela, the reported casualties continue to rise as specialized teams work through the wreckage. Government officials confirmed on Friday morning that the death toll has climbed to at least 589 individuals, with another 2,980 people sustaining injuries. Amid the ongoing devastation, rescue crews have successfully extracted dozens of survivors from the debris.
The crisis has triggered a massive international response, drawing hundreds of specialized emergency responders from across Central and South America. These international teams joined local forces on Friday, focusing their efforts on digging through pulverized concrete and collapsed structures to locate missing residents.
The destruction was caused by an unusual seismic phenomenon known as a doublet sequence, where two massive earthquakes of comparable strength occur in rapid succession within the same geographic area. The event began on Wednesday evening at approximately 6:04 p.m. ET with an initial magnitude 7.2 foreshock. That first quake originated roughly 14 miles east-northeast of San Felipe at a depth of 12.6 miles. Just 39 seconds later, a more powerful magnitude 7.5 mainshock struck roughly 17 miles east-northeast of the same city, originating at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles.
The shallow nature of the mainshock generated "violent" ground movements near the epicenter—the second-highest intensity rating utilized by global seismologists. The impact was so severe that measurable tremors radiated outward for hundreds of miles, shaking urban centers far from the epicenter. Since the initial double impact, the region has been rattled by more than 200 aftershocks, complicating rescue operations and threatening unstable structures.
Data indicate these are the most powerful earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century, surpassing a magnitude 7.0 event that struck Sucre state in 1997 and rivaling a historic magnitude 7.7 coastal earthquake from 1900.
The state of La Guaira, located roughly 30 miles north of the capital city of Caracas, has borne the brunt of the devastation. Local authorities have declared the state a disaster zone following the total collapse of numerous buildings. Preliminary geological and economic models suggest the financial impact of the disaster will be severe, representing a major economic catastrophe for the nation. Given the scale of the structural collapse and the number of areas still awaiting fully cleared debris, officials fully expect the casualty count to keep rising as search and recovery efforts move deeper into the ruins.
