Family Announces Burial Plans For Physiotherapist Mary Habila Found Dead In Minister Umahi's House As Police Insist On Autopsy

The family of 26-year-old physiotherapist Mary Habila, popularly known as Mara, has announced her burial arrangements following her death at the residence of Nigeria's Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Ebonyi State.

The announcement comes as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, with authorities maintaining that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause.

According to the family, Habila, who was born on September 18, 2000, died on June 27, 2026. Her funeral service is scheduled for Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Deeper Life Bible Church in Nok, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Family members, friends, colleagues, church members and sympathisers are expected to attend the service to pay their final respects.

Habila's death has drawn significant public attention since reports emerged that she died at Minister Umahi's official residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State. Earlier reports also alleged that she was found unclothed when her body was removed from the residence, prompting widespread calls for a transparent investigation.

Minister Umahi has confirmed that Habila died at his residence, stating that she was a physiotherapist who had been seconded from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences to the Federal Ministry of Works. He has also said he requested a comprehensive autopsy and urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work.

Police have reiterated that an autopsy remains a crucial part of the ongoing investigation.

The case has continued to generate nationwide interest, with many Nigerians calling for an independent and thorough investigation into the events leading to Habila's death.

Meanwhile, police sources familiar with the investigation said detectives are working to establish a detailed timeline of what occurred at the minister's residence. Investigators are reportedly examining who was present, the actions taken after Habila was found unresponsive, and when emergency medical assistance was requested.

Minister Umahi has denied any wrongdoing and has threatened legal action against individuals he claims have circulated false information about the incident. However, investigations remain ongoing as authorities continue gathering witness statements and forensic evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding Habila's death.
