The video, obtained by KTLA, shows the helicopter descending, caught from afar on the vehicle camera of Yera Valencia. She said: “I downloaded the video of my dashcam. It’s a little dot on the video. It’s a crisp video and it just goes down.” She added: “God, it’s so close, it could have happened to anyone. My parents walk down the street.” The two back-to-back Tuesday night crashes resulted in five deaths — two involving the bus and SUV, and three as a result of the chopper going down, killing reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw and pedestrian Edy Gutierrez Mejia.

INEC LAUNCHES ONLINE SELF-SERVICE VOTER REGISTRATION FOR FIRST-TIME VOTERS, EXTENDS CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION EXERCISE.(PHOTO)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rolled out a new self-service online platform for first-time voter registration to enhance accessibility and boost citizen participation in the electoral process.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Nasarawa State, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq, announced the development at a news briefing on Tuesday in Lafia, the state capital.

Abubakar-Sadiq said the platform will become operational on **Wednesday, July 8**, through INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal. Eligible citizens will be able to follow step-by-step guidelines to complete their registration, including biometric capture, using personal devices without visiting any INEC office.

“The platform incorporates robust identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to safeguard the credibility, integrity and accuracy of the National Register of Voters,” he said.

The REC described the initiative as consistent with INEC’s drive for innovation, greater accessibility, and improved service delivery.

However, voters already engaged in physical registration, those seeking to transfer their voting units, or individuals replacing lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are still required to visit INEC registration centres.

In a related development, INEC has approved a two-week extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise. The third and final phase, previously scheduled to end on July 10, will now run until **July 26**.

Abubakar-Sadiq explained that the extension was informed by a review of the exercise and feedback from INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.

“The extension is to provide an additional opportunity for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register as voters to do so ahead of future electoral activities,” he said.

“It underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters.”

The nationwide CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025. The REC noted that the first and second phases recorded significant registrations in Nasarawa State, including among persons living with disabilities.

He urged eligible residents of the state who are yet to register to take advantage of both the extended period and the new online platform.

Abubakar-Sadiq reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to a credible, inclusive, transparent, and technology-driven voter registration process. He also commended the media, political parties, civil society groups, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their continued support in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
