Ogbu made the call in a Facebook post on Monday while reacting to a disturbing viral video that allegedly shows a woman violently assaulting a young girl and attempting to slit her throat with a kitchen knife.
The incident reportedly occurred at IBB Estate in Umuahia. In the video, the young girl is seen crying profusely, pleading for help, and desperately shielding her throat as the woman allegedly threatens her with the knife.
Strongly condemning the attack, Ogbu described the act as attempted murder and demanded that those responsible face the full weight of the law.
“I have said it again and again, our society needs to declare a state of emergency on child abuse and violence against children. And offenders deserve nothing but the harshest punishment possible. This is a blight on human civilization,” he wrote.
“Happened today at IBB Estate, Umuahia. I have since forwarded the video to the state government and secured assurances of their prompt action. This is attempted murder!”
The video has triggered widespread outrage across social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice for the victim.
This latest incident comes amid growing public concern over child abuse cases in the country, adding to renewed calls for stronger child protection measures and stricter enforcement of existing laws.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
