Prince Harry and celebrities lose privacy lawsuit against UK tabloid publisher after four-year legal battle
A four-year legal battle involving Prince Harry and several high-profile celebrities against a major U.K. tabloid publisher has ended after a court dismissed their privacy claims.
Harry, along with Elton John, Sadie Frost, Elizabeth Hurley, and other plaintiffs, lost their High Court case against Associated Newspapers Limited, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday. The judge ruled that the group did not provide enough evidence to support their allegations of unlawful information gathering.
The lawsuit was filed in 2022, with the plaintiffs accusing the publisher of serious privacy violations, including claims that private investigators were hired to obtain personal information through illegal methods during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The allegations included claims of unauthorized surveillance, hidden listening devices placed in private locations, and payments made to police officials for confidential information. Associated Newspapers denied the accusations, calling them baseless and strongly disputing the claims.
Harry traveled from California to London earlier this year to testify in the case. During his testimony, he discussed the impact of media intrusion on his family, including experiences involving his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and his late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a 1997 car crash while being pursued by photographers in Paris.
Harry said he believed the case was about seeking accountability and an acknowledgment of wrongdoing, while also describing the legal process as a difficult experience.
The trial included testimony from other plaintiffs, including Hurley and John. Harry remains in London for previously scheduled appearances connected to charitable organizations, including work involving the Invictus Games.
