LASISMA, IKOYI-OBALENDE LCDA PLAN JOINT ACTION TO CURB ILLEGAL ENCROACHMENT
The leadership of the Lagos State Informal Space Management Authority (LASISMA) on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Honourable Bola Oladunjoye, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration towards effective management of Informal Urban Spaces (IUS) / Incidental Open Spaces (IOS) and to curb illegal encroachment within the Council area.
The engagement, held at the Office of the Executive Chairman, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, centred on the theme “Strengthening Collaboration for Effective Informal Space Management and Sustainable Urban Development.”
Leading the LASISMA delegation, the General Manager, TPL Daisi Oso, presented the Authority’s statutory mandate, functions and operational responsibilities, and highlighted areas where both organisations could collaborate on managing and protecting setbacks, Incidental Open Spaces, walkways and public institutions' rights-of-way (RoW) within Ikoyi-Obalende.
TPL Oso noted that effective management of IUS/ IOS requires a coordinated approach involving relevant government institutions and local communities. He sought the LCDA’s support in stakeholder sensitisation, data gathering and documentation, enforcement, and compliance with physical planning regulations.
He also flagged the need to prevent setbacks and other public spaces from becoming hideouts for hoodlums and to curb unauthorised activities and encroachment that could undermine public safety, physical orderliness and the aesthetics of the city.
He further stressed the importance of implementing relevant state physical planning policies and exploring opportunities for revenue optimisation through proper regulation and management of informal spaces.
Responding, the Executive Chairman, Honourable Bola Oladunjoye, warmly welcomed the LASISMA team and commended the General Manager for what he described as an impressive and comprehensive presentation. He noted that the LASISMA initiative was multidimensional, covering various aspects of informal space management, including the need to properly designate car parks, children’s playgrounds, garages, and other uses of public space.
The Chairman expressed the Council’s readiness to collaborate with LASISMA towards ensuring peaceful coexistence among residents and businesses and assured the Authority of the Council’s support whenever enforcement becomes necessary. He added that collaboration between the two institutions would help promote greater physical planning compliance and ensure public spaces are properly managed for the benefit of residents.
The engagement allowed both organisations to identify practical areas of cooperation towards safeguarding informal urban and incidental open spaces while promoting sustainable physical development within Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of a gift by the General Manager, TPL Daisi Oso, on behalf of LASISMA, to the Executive Chairman.
In attendance from Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA were the Director, Environmental Services Department, Dr. Akingbehin Samuel; Supervising Councillor for Environment, Hon. (Mrs.) Anu Amusan; Chief of Staff, Hon. Ademola Afolabi; Consultant, Mr. Muyiwa Okesanya; and Head of ICT, Mr. Akanbi Adeola. LASISMA was represented by its Directors, Heads of Units and Town Planning Officers.
The meeting closed with a shared commitment to strengthen inter-agency cooperation, enhance compliance, and promote well-planned, safe, orderly, and sustainable urbanisation in Ikoyi-Obalende and Lagos State at large.
