National Treasure 3 officially in development, with Nicolas Cage expected to return

More than 20 years after Nicolas Cage's Ben Gates launched a quest to steal the Declaration of Independence in "National Treasure," a third movie in the franchise is finally moving forward.

Director Jon Turteltaub announced the development during a live recording of the "National Treasure Hunt" podcast at the Philadelphia Visitor Center. The event was part of a weekend celebrating the original 2004 movie, which featured several scenes filmed in Philadelphia.

Turteltaub told the audience that the project is now "finally real," while emphasizing that it remains subject to the uncertainties of Hollywood and could still fall apart before reaching theaters.

The director said he and Disney have agreed on a script and that members of the original cast are expected to return as much as possible, including Cage as treasure hunter Ben Gates.

The announcement ends years of uncertainty surrounding the long-discussed sequel. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said in 2024 that screenwriter Ted Elliott, known for his work on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, had joined the project. Bruckheimer later said in 2025 that the movie was getting closer to production. Cage, however, said in 2024 that there was no "National Treasure 3."

Disney and Cage have not publicly commented on Turteltaub's announcement. No production schedule, complete cast or release date has been announced.

The original "National Treasure" was released in 2004 and earned $347.5 million worldwide. Its 2007 sequel, "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," performed even better, bringing in $459.2 million globally.

Disney later expanded the franchise with the 2022 streaming series "National Treasure: Edge of History," which was canceled after one season.
