EDO POLICE CONVENES POLITICAL PARTIES, SETS SECURITY TONE FOR 2027 ELECTIONEERING

The Edo State Police Command has convened Chairmen of political parties, candidates and other key stakeholders in the electoral process for a strategic security meeting ahead of the 2027 electioneering campaigns.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, 16th September, 2026, was designed to strengthen engagement between the Police and political actors, promote early understanding of security expectations, and establish a framework for peaceful and lawful political activities across the State.

Addressing participants, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Patrick Daaor, psc(+), mnips, emphasised that the role of the Police is to create the conditions for lawful political activity to thrive, not to participate in the political contest, and stressed the need for responsible conduct and sustained cooperation with security agencies.

The Commissioner noted that the security of the electoral process is a shared responsibility, requiring political parties, candidates, their supporters and security agencies to play their respective roles within the law, while urging parties to conduct all rallies, campaigns and meetings peacefully and in accordance with extant laws and regulations.

He further urged political actors to promptly communicate their planned activities to the Police to facilitate intelligence-led security arrangements and to discourage their supporters from acts capable of escalating political disagreements into violence, intimidation or disorder.

The meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to raise concerns, seek clarification and align with the Command on security arrangements, as the Command reiterated its commitment to providing a secure environment for all lawful political activities without discrimination, while taking necessary measures to prevent threats to public peace.

The CP added that the engagement will not be a one-off meeting but the beginning of a series of engagements as political activities intensify, noting that peaceful elections do not begin on election day but with responsible conduct long before the ballot is cast, and that while parties may seek different mandates, we share one State, and we must protect the same peace.
