 Heavy Rainfall Causes Building Collapse, Power Pole Damage in Awka

The prolonged rainfall of September 22, has caused significant damage in parts of Awka, leaving families displaced and raising fresh concerns over erosion and public infrastructure.

Two buildings reportedly collapsed at Umudioka by Agu Oye in Awka following the failure of a nearby gully erosion site during the heavy downpour.

Household belongings were scattered around the affected buildings, as residents assessed the extent of the damage. No death was recorded, although one affected family was rendered homeless.

One of the affected family members, Okwy Nweke, said the incident occurred suddenly after floodwater became improperly channelled and gradually created a gully that weakened the surrounding area.

Nweke appealed to the Anambra State Government for urgent assistance, explaining that the family lost several belongings to the incident and currently requires support to secure accommodation.

The Managing Director of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, Dr Ossy Onuko, attributed the collapse to an old erosion channel that had progressively affected adjoining structures.

Onuko assured residents that the State Government would take necessary measures to address the erosion site and minimize further damage, while noting that other erosion locations also require attention.

Meanwhile, four electricity poles carrying high-tension cables reportedly fell around the Old Government House area during the rainfall, highlighting the impact on infrastructure and public safety.

The developments have renewed calls for coordinated action by government, communities and residents, particularly around erosion-prone areas, as authorities continue efforts toward protecting homes, infrastructure and lives.
