St. Patrick’s College, Awka, has emerged winner of the 2026 National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) State Quiz Competition in Anambra, securing the state’s zonal ticket with distinction.

The competition, held September 29 at the State Secretariat Complex, Awka, featured six schools, with St. Patrick’s College overcoming five others to clinch the coveted first position successfully.

The participating schools included Divine Light Standard Academy, Abagana; Beth Roots Model Secondary School, Onitsha; All Hallows Seminary, Onitsha; Holy Child Convent, Amichi; and Bishop Memorial Girls Secondary School, Ukpor.

With the victory, St. Patrick’s College will represent Anambra at the zonal competition scheduled for Enugu State later this year, where it will compete against qualifiers from other states.

Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, commended participating students and teachers for their commitment, urging them to sustain Anambra’s tradition of excellence and proudly represent the state at all times.

Ogugua said the competition offered students an opportunity to understand legislation, governance and the rule of law, stressing that early civic education would prepare them for responsible leadership in future.

He urged participants to compete with passion, fairness and humility, noting that understanding laws and respecting them are essential to building society responsibly and sustaining good governance and responsible citizenship.

NILDS Anambra State Coordinator, Mrs. Uche Okechukwu, said the initiative had grown from a modest programme for schools in Abuja into a nationwide platform promoting knowledge of democratic governance leadership.

She said the competition strengthens students’ understanding of lawmaking, representation and civic responsibility, while promoting critical thinking, teamwork and respect for diverse opinions as foundations of democracy and responsible citizenship.
