A UTAH FATHER AND SON DISPLAYED A LOVE THAT TRANSCENDED LIFE ITSELF WHEN THEY REFUSED TO GIVE UP ON THEIR FAMILY WHILE THERE WAS STILL BREATH IN THEIR LUNGS.(PHOTO)

A Utah father and son displayed a love that transcended life itself when they refused to give up on their family while  there was still breath in their lungs.

Tragedy visited Riverdale, Utah, like a thief in the night, stealing a portion of this community's heart and leaving devastation in its wake.

However, despite that devastation, there is also admiration.

Admiration for a life well spent and then sold dearly for loved ones.

That admiration is for Nate Bird, the man who saw death coming and didn't blink as well as his young son who gave everything alongside his father.

This very real human drama played out at the Bird residence, where Nate resided with his wife Lindsey and their six children.

Their home at 4611 South 1150 West was fully engulfed in flames at 1:46 p.m. on October 1st, when first responders arrived.

The Bird family, who are known in the community for their love and selflessness, showed absolute bravery and love, when things were at their absolute worst.

By the time the sun rose yesterday, October 3rd, half of the Bird family was gone from the world, but, leaving a legacy. A legacy of love beyond the restraints of life and courage in the face of de@th itself.

Nate and his young son set the example of unconditional love in the face of insurmountable odds. While his house was in the process of total destruction, Nate battled through the carnage to deliver his wife and one child safe from the home. All the while, his son was in the home trying to save his siblings.

With EMS on the way, Nate didn't hesitate or wait. He turned around and walked straight back into the inferno, determined to save his family... or die trying.

Sadly, Nate did not return, and the three children that were left inside ultimately perished. We hope they knew their dad was coming for them, and he laid his life down beside them.

His heroic son, who, so like his father, threw concern for personal safety to the side was severely burned for his efforts. He was placed in the hospital in critical condition but, heartbreakingly, succumbed to his injuries, joining his siblings and father.

Now, a wife and mother is trying to understand how half of her world is gone. Two brothers are waking to a world without their father or four of their siblings.

A community is showing its support in quiet strength, compassion, and togetherness. Closing in around the survivors as a communal shield, a living wall of support.

Through all of the actions and emotions following this absolute tragedy remains the story of a family who loved each other and always tried their best for everyone. When faced with the unimaginable, when asked to accept the unacceptable, they sacrificed everything for each other.

Our hearts and thought go out to the surviving Bird family members and the entire community of Riverdale in this time of grief.
