Atiku Apologizes to Nigerian Teachers, Citing 'Failed Leadership' Amid Economic Hardship

Abuja, Nigeria - Former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has issued a heartfelt apology to Nigerian teachers, attributing their current economic plight to what he described as the 'failed leadership' of the nation. In a statement released on Monday by his spokesperson, Abubakar expressed deep concern over the escalating cost of living, which he stated is severely hindering teachers' ability to provide for their families and effectively carry out their crucial educational duties.

Abubakar, a staunch advocate for education, took a moment to laud the immense sacrifices made by Nigerian educators. Reflecting on his own formative years, he shared a personal connection to the teaching profession. "Of course, I appreciate Nigerian teachers. I am a product of their work and the education I received in their classrooms," he remarked. He fondly recalled the teachers from his early days in Jada who recognized his potential as a young orphan, teaching him not only core subjects like arithmetic and grammar but also giving him a sense of future.

Empathy for Struggling Educators

The former Vice President conveyed profound distress over the challenging circumstances faced by teachers today. He lamented hearing stories of educators forced to walk long distances because exorbitant transport fares consume a significant portion of their meager salaries. Equally heartbreaking, he noted, were accounts of teachers resorting to borrowing food on credit simply to feed their families before attending to their students. "No nation can rise above the level of its teachers," Abubakar asserted, pledging to honor them not merely with commendations but with tangible policies designed to enhance their welfare and make life more affordable for them.

Critique of Current Leadership

Abubakar did not shy away from criticizing the current administration, drawing a stark contrast between his personal reverence for teachers and what he perceived as a detachment from the educational community by President Bola Tinubu. "It is both revealing and deeply embarrassing that Bola Tinubu cannot name a single teacher who stood before him or a classmate who sat beside him," Atiku stated. He argued that leaders who fail to acknowledge those who laid the foundation of their own education are fundamentally disconnected from the daily struggles of those sustaining the educational system.

"If he cannot honour the people who helped shape him, how can he understand the sacrifices teachers make today?" Abubakar questioned, suggesting that such a leader would struggle to ensure dignified or affordable living conditions for teachers, either nationally or within their own communities.

Beyond Commemorative Messages: A Call for Action

The chieftain emphasized that while teachers are continuously expected to give their best, they face relentless financial pressure from rising costs of food, transportation, rent, and electricity, all while their incomes stagnate. He stressed that a government cannot simply praise teachers on special occasions like Teachers' Day and then abandon them to hardship for the remainder of the year. "A commemorative message cannot pay a teacher’s bills," Abubakar declared, advocating for respect to be demonstrated through fair working conditions, reliable support systems, and policies aimed at improving affordability.

Concluding his statement, Abubakar offered a direct apology: "I apologise to Nigeria’s teachers and to all Nigerians on behalf of a leadership that has failed to make their welfare a priority." He underscored his belief that teachers deserve far more than mere praise, and indeed, all Nigerians deserve a government that genuinely prioritizes their lives and livelihoods.
