Lawmakers Call For Compulsory Free Education For Girls The House of Representatives has asked the Federal Ministry of Education to drastically reduce or if possible, eradicate the number of out of school girls by ensuring free and compulsory education for the Girl child across the country. This came after the plenary adopted a proposal made by Kafilat Ogbara, a member from Lagos State, in honor of the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child. Kafilat emphasized the right of adolescent girls to a safe, educated, and healthy life, emphasizing the need for girls’ leadership and creating platforms for them to voice their opinions in policy making.  NIS To Deploy E-gates, Drones To Improve Border Security The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a plan to deploy electronic gates, aircraft and drones for surveillance, aerial monitoring and improved security of Nigerian borders. Caroline Wuraola Adepoju, the Acting Comptroller-General, NIS, who disclosed this during a retreat at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, said the acquisition of the equipment has been captured in the 2024 Ministry of interior budget. According to Mrs Adepoju, the infrastructure will go a long way to help NIS to discharge its core mandate of monitoring the movement of persons across the country’s land, air and sea borders. “The E-gate will be utilized early next year to ensure that our Migration Information Data Analysis System (MIDAS) improves on them, ensuring our borders, air, land and sea are fortified,” Mrs Adepoju said. CBN lifts Forex restrictions on importation of 43 items The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has finally lifted the foreign exchange restrictions it placed on the importation of 43 items eight years ago. In a statement released on Thursday, October 12, the director of corporate communications of the bank, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, said a significant change has been made in the foreign exchange market policy. Importers who were previously restricted from purchasing foreign exchange for 43 specific items, as outlined in the 2015 Circular referenced as TED/FEFPC/GEN/O1/010 and its addendums, are now allowed to participate in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market to buy foreign currency for their transactions. As of October 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had restricted access to Forex from FX market for the following 43 items: Rice, cement, Margarine, Palm kernel, palm oil products and vegetable oils, Meat and processed meat products and Vegetables and processed vegetable products. Israel-Palestine War: Death Toll Surges To 2,300 The death toll in the Israel-Palestine war continued to climb on Wednesday, four days after Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the tiny Gaza Strip. The brutal attack has claimed more than 1,200 lives in Israel, including over 250 people who attended a music festival, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman confirmed on Wednesday. Some 22 Americans were also reportedly killed in Israel.
