It is some times religiously wise to understand the origin of a particular music instrument so that when you are using them, you will channel your praise to God in heaven instead of a smaller god without you knowing. The picture above showing some music instrument that looks like a tambourine is called a ''Sistrum''.A sistrum is a musical instrument of the percussion family and was mostly used in the ancient times in Iraq and Egypt. It is made of Brass or bronze. The name of the instrument ''Sistrum'' is derived from the Greek verb Scio which means to shake and Seistron which means ''That which is being shaken''.Its name in the ancient Egyptian language was ''Sekhem and Sesheshet''.Sekhem is the simpler hoop like sistrum, while sesheshet is the naos shaped one.The Egyptian sistrum was a sacred instrument in ancient Egypt, which is being used to worship their god Bastet. They also use it during religious ceremonies, particularly in the worship of the goddess Hathor, with the U-shape of the sistrums handle and frame, seen as resembling the face and horns of the cow goddess. It was also shaken to avert the flooding of the nile and to frighten away set.The goddess Isis who is reffered to by the Egyptians as ''Mother and creator'' was depicted holding a pall symbolizing the flooding of the Nile,in one hand and a sistrum in the other. The goddess Bast too is often depicted holding a sistrum, symbolizing her role as a goddess of dance, joy and festivity. The sistrum also known as the Sistra are still being used in the rites of the Coptic and Ethiopian churches. The wife of Ramesses II,Nefertari is shown in the picture below immediately after these write up holding a sistrum. The sistrum was occassionally revived in 19th century western orchestral music, appearing most prominently in Act 1 of the Opera Les Troyens between 1856-1858 by the French composer Hector Berlioz.Nowadays, the sistrum instrument is replaced by the ''Tambourine''.The effect produced by the sistrum in music when shaken is like the modern day Tambourines. To all christian pray over any tambourines before using because the sistrum is also called the holy rattle, which can be interpreted spiritually as the the worship of rattle snake.God will never allow our praise to him,be diverted to another god,Amen.More photos below.
