Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. American-born Nigerian professional rower,Chierika Ukogu made history yesterday tuesday after qualifying for the semi-finals of rowing at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics.The 23 year old Stanford graduate and soon to be medical student to the rowing semi-finals came in fifth in the third quarter final of the Women's single sculls in 7:54.44 secs.She is Nigeria's first ever rower in the Olympics to have got that far,the semi-finals will be on wednesday.''Heading into Rio,it's a really wonderful opportunity for Nigeria.This is the first time we've had an athlete at the Olympics in the sport of Rowing'',said Okungu to the Press.More photos below.
