 Terrorists, banditry activities in Northwest have reduced – Shehu Sani Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central Senator, has disclosed a decrease in the activities of terrorists and bandits in the Northwest. Sani said the recent killings of some top terrorists’ leaders could have been responsible for the decrease. Posting on X, the former lawmaker wrote: “In the last few weeks, there is a noticeable decrease in terrorist and banditry attacks and kidnappings in the North Western parts of this country. “The elimination of some of the top terrorist leaders must have been responsible.This is commendable and should be sustained.” In the past weeks, notable bandit leaders have been killed in the North. Those eliminated include- Haliru Kachalla Sububu or Buzu, Kachalla Tukur Sharme (killed by rival gang), Sani Black, another prominent bandit leader, killed along with his brother and two children, Kachalla Makore, Kachalla Mai Shayi Kachalla Tsoho Lulu and Mai’Yar Gitta.     Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has pledged to put in more resources and energy in recruiting school children in the fight against economic and financial crimes.
Magu made the pledge today, November 21, 2017 during school debate as part of activities to mark the “Year 2017 International Anti-Corruption Day”.The debate which kicked off at the EFCC Academy, Karu, Abuja, saw students from participating secondary schools locked horns on the topics: “Poverty fuels corruption more than greed”, and “Preventing corruption from happening is more effective than arrest and prosecution of offenders”.As they argued for and against the topic at a knock out session, the students who came from Roberto Secondary school, Wuse 2, Abuja, Aduvie International School, Jahi, Abuja, Funtaj International School, Apo, Abuja, Starville School, Gwarimpa, Abuja, Lavogue International School, Karu, Abuja, Olumawu School, Wuse 2, Abuja and Shining Star College, Kubwa, expressed deep knowledge on the corruption problem and possible solutions.Magu who played host to the students expressed his enthusiasm and reiterated the need to ‘catch them young’ in the fight against corruption.Speaking through the desk officer, EFCC Integrity Club, Zainab Bello Tifi, he said “When it comes to the fight against corruption, EFCC is always at the fore- front and we will continue to do so. The EFCC is sponsoring this event and will even do more as a build up to the grand event coming up at the Musa Yar’Adua Center, Abuja on the 9th of December, 2017” .Magu said there are about twenty two other agencies actively involved and all represented in the planning and execution of the whole activities to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day.Jane Onwumere, of the Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms, TUGAR, which is the secretariat for the Inter-Agency Task Team of Anti-Corruption Agencies, said that the debate competition is an annual event organized by the Inter-Agency Task Team to commemorate the Anti- Corruption day.“In 2009, the Inter-Agency Task Team had its retreat and one of the agreements arrived at was the need to commemorate the World Anti-Corruption day which is on the 9th of December every year and what we had today is just one of the activities lined up to mark that day which is the debate by schools to avail the young ones an opportunity to express their thoughts about Corruption and to tell us what they can do to fight corruption and to also tell us what they think we should be doing to fight corruption”. She said.Announcing that this year’s December 9 fell on a saturday, she invited the schools to be present at the debate finale which will hold on December 11, 2017 at the Yar’dua center Abuja.
