 U.S imposes sanctions on former Congo President Joseph Kabila The United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on former Democratic Republic of Congo President Joseph Kabila for his support of ‌Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and for fueling political instability in Congo's troubled east. The U.S. Treasury Department said M23 and its political-military arm, the Congo River Alliance (AFC), had been stoking violent conflict in eastern DRC, resulting in the deaths of thousands of civilians and a mass displacement crisis. Treasury said Kabila had provided financial support to the ​AFC in order to influence the political situation in eastern DRC, while encouraging DRC troops to defect and join AFC forces. ​It said Kabila was working to regain influence over the government by backing a candidate opposed to the current ⁠leader.      President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that his administration will strive to complete on-going projects that will impact positively on the lives of the people.
Speaking Wednesday when he received the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Ikenwoli at the State House in Abuja, President Buhari said he was mindful of what infrastructural development could bring to uplift the standard of living of the people.
He also said that his administration was taking new measures to address the security situation in the country.
Replying to comments that the Itsekiri people gave him massive support during the elections, the President remarked that he appreciated the support, saying, “I have all the figures of votes I got and I know what itsekiri people did.”
Earlier, the traditional ruler who spoke through Chief Brown Mene congratulated the President on his electoral victory and commended him for his successes so far in the battle against insurgency and his continued determination to tackle corruption.
While also praising the President for dredging works on the Escravos and Warri Rivers, the Olu of Warri requested for intervention on some ecological problems in his domain as well as the resolution of issues surrounding the Ogidigben Gas Revolution Park.
