 M23 says hundreds of Burundi soldiers captured in latest Congo offensive The Rwanda-backed M23 group has captured hundreds of Burundian soldiers during its latest offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rebel official said, as clashes continued despite a warning from the Trump administration. Last week M23 entered the strategic town of Uvira near the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept". Rwanda denies supporting M23 and has blamed Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting.       The Department of State hosted the Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama and his interagency delegation from Nigeria, for the Binational Commission (BNC) themed, “Innovation and Ingenuity.”
The Binational Commission is the premiere platform of engagement between Governments of the United States and Nigeria to expand cooperation and advance shared goals.
The delegations discussed areas of strategic collaboration toward measurable progress, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, development, good governance, and security cooperation.
The team led by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva accompanied by the Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mallam Kyari and Hon. Musa Sarkin Adar held strategic meetings at the #BNC with;
the Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Energy Resources, Frank Fannon. The focus for the meeting is to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector (upstream investments and support for #NNPC's infrastructure projects),
the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of International Affairs of the U.S. Department of Energy, Matthew Zais, to secure alignment on US Oil and Gas investments while deepening support for NNPC's infrastructure projects,
the Managing Director for Africa, Worku Gachou and other Top Executives to seek financing intervention for NNPC's projects and deepening of engagements with Investors to deliver infrastructure projects and
the Ag. Deputy Director, Todd Abrajano and other key executives. The conversation focused on establishing strategic investor relations that will culminate in investments in Nigeria.More photos below.
