 IGP DISU PAYS OPERATIONAL VISIT TO  AKWA IBOM, PRESIDES OVER PASSING-OUT CEREMONY OF 1,068 RETRAINED CONSTABLES The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today, 30th April 2026, undertook an official visit to Akwa Ibom State, where he paid a courtesy call on the Executive Governor, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, ahead of the passing-out ceremony of retrained Police Constables in Uyo. ONU: NIGERIA MUST PROTECT ITS AGRICULTURAL BIODIVERSITY.{PHOTO}.#PRESS RELEASE

 

The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said that Nigeria must protect and find ways at preserving the various Agricultural biodiversity such as the wide array of plants and Animals indigenous to the country.
Dr. Onu made the remarks when he declared open the National Stakeholders Sensitization workshop on Animal Biotechnology applications and regulatory perspectives, in Abuja during the week.
The Minister urged the National Biotechnology Development Agency to improve the productivity of Animal farming.
He said; “ NABDA has to play greater role in helping our dear nation find a solution to the conflict that exists between animal and crop farmers in the country. NABDA has to intensify research in improving productivity and yield in animal farming.”
He urged on African nations to ensure the use of STI (Science, Technology and Innovation) to convert their abundant natural resources to products and services imported from abroad.
Dr. Onu further highlighted the importance of Agriculture to Nigeria’s socio-economic boost. In his words, “It is estimated that Agriculture accounts for about 35% of the continents Gross Domestic Product, 40% of it exports and 70% of its employment.”
He added that, proper application of STI in agriculture will help solve many of the challenges faced by the nation today.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural development, Alh. Sabo Nanono who was represented by the Director of Animal Husbandry in the Ministry, Dr. Solarin, said that technologies employed into the field of biotechnology, should be safe and have no adverse effects on food safety and the environment.
Earlier the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Sunday Edet Akpan said that the government at all levels should adopt and create viable policies on Animal biotechnology.
He further called for more efforts on bio-technology adaptations and hailed the existing productive synergy between Agriculture and Animal biotechnology stakeholders.
