Only Four Teachers Teaching 227 Pupils In Community Primary School Umungara Obohia, Imo State – Amatalam Laments
The headmistress of Community Primary School, Umungara, Amano-Obohia in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State urged those in authority to employ more teachers.
Mrs. Amatalam Charity has decried out for the shortage of teachers in the school, describing the situation as disheartening and frustrating.
According to her, the school currently has only five teachers who are teaching over 200 pupils.
Mrs. Amatalam said this when Waka About Africa team visited the school, she said it affected them in preparing the pupils effectively, especially whenever they have both internal and external competition.
The headmistress lamented that the situation had worsened learning in the school and deprived the pupils of quality education.
She further stressed that the situation is a common phenomenon in primary schools in most rural communities in the state.
She said, “We don’t have enough teachers, we are currently experiencing this shortage and it’s affecting learning among the pupils.
Currently, we have only four teachers plus the headmistress who is among those that are teaching this number of pupils.”
“Imagine a situation where one teacher is combining the nursery and primary 1, another teacher in primary 2 & 3, also one in primary 4 & 5 classes together while the fourth teacher in primary 6.
She, therefore, called on the Imo state government to, as matter of urgency, recruit teachers to improve the quality of education at the school.
While conducting our team around the school, she introduced, a primary six boy, Okoro Delight Tochukwu who represented the school and won the 2nd runner-up during the 2021 Mbaise Mathematics Competition for Primary Schools held all over the three Local Government Areas that made up of Mbaise nation.
According to her, it was a combined effort by her and the four teachers to make sure their pupils do well and came top, Master Okoro being the sole representative from Ahiazu LGA made the school and his community proud.
Mrs. Amatalam also begged the well-meaning Umungara Community, other well-wishers and Alumni of the Community Primary School Umungara Obohia to come to their aid in lifting the school to a standard to enable the children to have a good environment for better learning.
She expresses her gratitude to the Umungara community for supporting them in the last celebrated school’s Inter-House Sports competition held in November 2021 at the school.
Stating that many villagers have returned their children since after the well-packaged funfair inter-house sports. She also prayed that God will continue to bless their sponsors.
