More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added. How Anambra-Based NGO Is Trying To Save Young Commercial Sex Workers

A Non-Governmental Organization, Save Young Girls Motherhood Foundation is championing a novel campaign to rescue young girls who are into commercial sex business.

In the hinterlands of Onitsha and subordinate towns, as well as other areas in Anambra State, the organization has taken up a self-sponsored initiative, moving from one brothel to the other, giving the young girls a reason to quit the odd job.

It says it is determined to see the girls turn a new leaf, get engaged with something meaningful, and become better for themselves, their families and the larger society.

According to the founder of the organization, Reverend Sister Dorathy Okoli , the idea is to help young girls who have shown legitimate willingness to leave their current work engaged with something productive; to remould their ideologies and help them reintegrate into the better society.

She said that the NGO, which was founded in September, 2021, also supports the girls through skill acquisition and other starter models to keep their hands and mind occupied with legitimate means of survival.

She however noted that the organization is faced with both financial and logistical difficulties in taking up rehabilitation and support for all the girls who want to leave the work, and appealed to government and concerned stakeholders to build a rehab home, where this group of people can be reformed.

Some of the girls who spoke under anonymity, explained why they went into the work, mostly as a result of financial difficulties, and said that they were open to quiting the job if the right help comes their way.

They said that they were willing to work with the NGO, and close the present chapter of their lives.
